Here's a piece of advice for poor bunker players. For what it's
worth, sand shots aren't as hard as people think. But
you definitely need to practice them. Because if you're hitting out
of the sand for the first time, and don't understand how to get
out, you'll take two or more strokes just to leave the bunker.
Your main goal in a sand bunker is to get over the lip and out of
the trap. So if you are in a fairway bunker and there's a high lip,
don't worry about hitting a 150 yard shot to get close to the
green, just concentrate on getting out in 1 shot... even if you
have to use a 60 degree wedge to get out. On the other hand, if you
are 150 yards out and the lip is low, (and you have a good lie),
you can try to pick the ball clean for a longer shot.
Around the green is a whole different story. If you pick the ball
clean around the green, you will most likely skull the shot, thus
sending the ball clear off the other side of the green. When
hitting out of the sand around the green, don't actually hit
the ball; hit the sand. Usually about 1-3 inches behind the ball.
The sand will pop the ball out and hopefully onto the green. But
you have to swing pretty hard to get it out, so keep that in mind.
Practice these things and you should be all set when you actually
hit a sand bunker for the first time
Here's something else that all good low single digit handicappers
do well. The next time you are in the sand, use your normal swing
with the set-up described below. I suggest this because of the
effect fear of sand seems to have on
so many amateurs. They get in a bunker and suddenly they make 14
swing changes to get their ball out. The result usually is a lunge,
stab, or lurch, with the ball either left in the sand or bladed
over the green.
Instead, when playing a bunker shot, pick a spot a couple of inches
behind the ball and try to make contact there. Concentrate on that
spot as hard as you normally would the ball. Now that you know
where to make contact, set up with the ball
positioned opposite your left heel, open your stance, open the
clubface, shuffle your feet into the sand until you feel securely
planted, and grip down a little to adjust for the lowered level of
your feet. Go ahead and make your normal golf swing as smoothly as
you know how. I think the results will please you.
Lastly, here are some very specific things you can do to improve
your sand play. Your fairway bunker shots are bound to improve if
you follow these
suggestions:
* Take a little wider stance than normal, lean slightly into your
lead leg and dig your feet into the sand. This will help restrict
body turn, minimize leg action and secure your footing.
* Position the ball in the center of your stance with your hands
slightly ahead of the ball.
* Grip down on the club a quarter to one-half inch.
* Make a smooth tempo three-quarter-length backswing.
* Swing forward, trying to pick the ball off the sand.
Pick your club selection only after you have examined your lie, how
far away and how high the front lip of the bunker is, and how much
distance the ball has to travel. Take at least one more club to hit
fairway bunker shots.
Remember, getting out of the sand effectively is only one part of a
good game. If you are truly interested in finding out the specific
